Primary teacher education is a five-year program taught in English at Università degli Studi Europea di Roma, in Roma, Italy, structured as a single continuous course that leads to a qualification for teaching at the primary school level, following the model used across Italian universities for this profession. The discipline combines pedagogy, developmental psychology, and subject-specific teaching methods, preparing students to plan lessons, manage classrooms, and support the learning of children in the early years of formal education. Coursework in primary teacher education typically covers child development, educational psychology, curriculum design, and teaching methods for core subjects such as language, mathematics, science, and the arts, alongside training in inclusive education for students with different learning needs. Students also study the history and philosophy of education, classroom assessment methods, and the use of digital tools in teaching. A significant part of the program usually involves supervised teaching practice in primary school settings, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge under the guidance of experienced educators. Admission to this kind of program is generally limited to a fixed number of places, reflecting the regulated nature of teacher training in Italy. Graduates of primary teacher education programs go on to work as primary school teachers, though the exact licensing and certification requirements depend on the country in which they intend to teach. Some graduates pursue further study in educational leadership, special education, or curriculum development. Delivered in English at a university in Roma, this program is designed for an international group of students interested in the theory and practice of primary education within an Italian academic setting, while preparing for teaching careers that may extend beyond Italy depending on local certification rules.
