Karabük University

Bachelor in Railway Systems Engineering

Karabük, Turkey Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Railway Systems Engineering prepares students to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure and technology that underpin rail transport, including track systems, rolling stock, signaling, and control systems. Coursework combines civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering fundamentals with rail-specific topics such as track design and maintenance, train dynamics, traction systems, and railway signaling and safety systems. Students study how railway networks are planned and operated, including scheduling, capacity planning, and the interaction between infrastructure and vehicles, as well as the safety standards that govern rail operations. Laboratory and project-based coursework gives students practical exposure to the engineering systems involved in modern rail networks, from mechanical components of rolling stock to the electronic systems used for signaling and train control. Because railway systems sit at the intersection of several engineering disciplines, students build a broad technical foundation that includes structural analysis, materials, and control systems alongside transport planning concepts. The program also addresses the growing role of high-speed and urban rail systems, which require specialized engineering knowledge distinct from conventional rail. Graduates find roles with national railway operators, urban transit authorities, rail infrastructure and construction firms, and companies that manufacture rolling stock or signaling equipment. The specialized nature of the degree positions graduates for technical roles in a sector experiencing continued investment in both intercity and urban rail infrastructure. This bachelor's program is taught in English over 4 years at Karabük University in Karabük, Turkey. The four-year curriculum begins with foundational engineering science before moving into rail-specific systems coursework, giving graduates both broad engineering grounding and specialized railway sector knowledge by the end of the program.
