Supervised by Dr Rahim Taheri, this 3-year full-time or 6-year part-time PhD project focuses on developing a reinforcement learning-based security solution for software-defined intrusion detection systems (IDS) in the School of Computing. The project aims to enhance the performance and quality of service (QoS) by applying reinforcement learning (RL) methods to improve real-time information gathering from the network environment. Key areas of study include SDN security, reinforcement learning applications in IDS, and adversarial attacks and defenses.

Software-defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a novel architecture that uses software to manage the separation between the control and data planes, reducing the complexity of network devices. However, the lack of intelligence in SDN switches can introduce vulnerabilities. This project seeks to address this by integrating RL methods into the IDS, enabling the system to adapt to changing environmental properties and apply necessary security policies in real-time.
