The Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control strategies are pivotal in addressing seakeeping challenges in maritime safety, especially as climate change intensifies storm frequencies and severity. This PhD project, supervised by Dr Ya Huang and Prof. Victor Becerra, will investigate optimal control strategies for seakeeping and shock mitigation on both manned and unmanned vessels, focusing on a 1x0.5 m test vessel, using stereo wave imaging and hydrodynamic computational models. Students will develop real-time seakeeping and shock mitigation controllers, contributing to the University's vision in future transportation and intelligent systems. The project aligns with the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering's strengths in stereo wave imaging, hydrodynamic modelling, and human biomechanics.

Students will engage with industrial partners, including marine robotic companies and coastguard agencies, and attend conferences and workshops. The project will develop a 6-degree-of-freedom full rigid body vessel model and implement selected control strategies on a test robotic boat in various sea conditions.
