This programme trains individuals to become certified welders using on-the-job work and college classes. It covers joining and cutting metals in beams, girders, pipes, and other metal parts used in construction, manufacturing, and repair. Upon completion, participants earn a journeyperson certificate that allows independent work in the trade.

Apprentices must first get a job with an employer who agrees to hire them. Once employed, they attend technical training at Medicine Hat College for about two months each year over three to four years. Classes are small, offering personal attention and hands-on practice. The college's updated facilities and experienced instructors help build welding skills.

Graduates can work as journeypersons in pipeline construction, steel fabrication, and heavy equipment repair. Some move into roles like welding inspector, foreman, or supervisor. Others start their own businesses or work as contract welders. The programme is managed by the Government of Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
