The Welding Apprenticeship program at Lethbridge Polytechnic takes three years to complete. It combines classroom learning with on-the-job training. About 80 percent of the program happens on the job under a qualified welder. The remaining time is spent in classrooms and the well-equipped welding lab on campus.

You will learn five types of welding: gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, metal-cored arc, shielded metal arc, and gas tungsten arc. You will also use oxy-acetylene and plasma cutters. Training includes safety, math, science, pattern development, and drawing interpretation. Instructors are experienced in the trade.

The program starts in late August. It is not available for international students. After completion, you can work in construction, repair shops, pipeline projects, steel fabrication, or structural assembly. The average salary for a welder in Alberta is $79,452 per year.
