About the Program

Are you interested in exploring the essential parts of wind turbines that make them tick? Perfect for engineers eager to drive the future of renewable wind energy. From the towering structures, the sophisticated nacelle and drivetrain, this course covers it all. You will gain insights into the design, materials, manufacturing processes, measurement, and digital tools used in the industry for these essential components and learn how to measure performance and understand the lifecycle of these powerful machines. The course consists of 13 modules, covering: General introduction of wind turbine mechanical, electrical and structural components Conceptual design and sizing, introducing design standards IEC 61400 Drivetrain topology, analytic loads calculations Materials usage and recycling (including rare-earth material) Tower design and manufacturing technologies Condition monitoring and sensing Life cycle analysis of selected components This course is for everyone who is interested in wind energy. What is in it for you? Upon the completion of the course, you will be able to: Describe the function of major components and how they work together to produce electricity, including materials used and manufacturing technologies Compare the different types of wind turbine drivetrains, including geared, medium-speed, and direct drive machines and understand the design tradeoffs Describe different manufacturing technologies (welded and additive manufactured) for wind turbine towers (steel and concrete) and present pros and cons Explain the measurement and sensing technologies on various components with the focus on condition monitoring Summarize the maintenance and repair procedures for wind turbine components, including safety protocols and troubleshooting techniques Use mathematical and engineering principles to design and size wind turbine components such as the shaft, gearbox, generator and supporting structures Perform simple analysis on health monitoring data of selected components using turbine measurement data from public domain Assess the environmental impact of turbine components throughout its entire life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to manufacturing, transportation, installation, operation, maintenance, and finally, decommissioning and disposal. What is in it for your company? Companies can significantly enhance their technical capabilities through educating their staff, ultimately leading to improved performance and reduced costs in their wind energy projects. Enhanced Technical Knowledge: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the function of major wind turbine components and how they work together to produce electricity, including the materials used and manufacturing technologies. Manufacturing Insights: Understand different manufacturing technologies for wind turbine towers, including welded and additive manufacturing for both steel and concrete, and be able to present the pros and cons of each method. Condition Monitoring: Explain the measurement and sensing technologies used on various components with a focus on condition monitoring, which is crucial for predictive maintenance and reducing downtime. Maintenance Procedures: Summarize maintenance and repair procedures for wind turbine components, including safety protocols and troubleshooting techniques, ensuring efficient and safe operations. Environmental and Lifecycle Assessment: Assess the environmental impact of turbine components throughout their entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction to decommissioning and disposal, promoting sustainable practices and compliance with environmental regulations. Operational Efficiency and Cost Savings: Predictive Maintenance: Implement predictive maintenance strategies based on condition monitoring data to reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs. Lifecycle Management: Optimize the lifecycle management of wind turbines, leading to extended operational life and reduced total cost of ownership. Competitive Advantage: stay ahead of industry developments and best practices, providing a competitive edge in the rapidly growing wind energy sector. Admission Admission to the course requires a B.Sc. or B.Eng. degree or higher and at least, two years of relevant working experience. The relevant working experience could be – but is not necessarily restricted to – employment in: The wind energy industry. Oil and gas companies. Shipping companies. Companies performing environmental assessment. Public agencies with responsibilities related to engineering and natural sciences. Since the programme is taught in English, you must have proficient English skills. Recommended prerequisites In addition to the admission requirements above, we strongly recommend that you have mathematics and programming skills equivalent to B.Sc. or B.Eng. level or higher. If you have few or no programming experiences, we recommend following our Scientific Programming for Wind Energy course as early as possible.
