Architecture combines the design of buildings with an understanding of structural systems, materials, and the social and environmental context in which structures are built. Programs in this field are typically organized around a sequence of design studio courses, in which students develop architectural projects from initial concept through detailed design, supported by coursework in construction technology, architectural history and theory, and structural principles. Drawing, model making, and increasingly computer-aided design and building information modeling are common technical skills developed throughout the program. Because architecture sits between art and engineering, students are expected to develop both creative design sensibility and technical competence in how buildings are actually constructed. Graduates commonly go on to work in architectural firms, urban design, construction and project management, or pursue further professional training toward licensure. This bachelor's program is offered by İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, with instruction conducted entirely in English over 4 years. Studying architecture in an English-medium program gives students access to international design references and literature throughout their training. Over the four years, the curriculum is expected to progress from introductory design exercises to more advanced, independent studio projects, with regular critique sessions forming a core part of the learning process. This studio-centered structure is characteristic of architecture education generally. Based in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, the university offers students exposure to varied urban and architectural contexts relevant to their design education.
