Automotive Engineering applies principles of mechanical, electrical, and materials engineering to the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of vehicles and their components. Students study vehicle dynamics, internal combustion and electric powertrains, chassis and suspension design, automotive materials, manufacturing processes, and increasingly electric and hybrid vehicle technology, alongside general mechanical engineering foundations such as thermodynamics, mechanics, and materials science. Coursework typically includes laboratory testing of engines and vehicle systems as well as computer-aided design projects. Graduates pursue careers with automotive manufacturers, parts suppliers, testing and certification bodies, and research and development departments, or continue into graduate study in mechanical or automotive engineering. As the industry shifts toward electrification and connected vehicles, the discipline increasingly overlaps with electrical engineering and software development as well.
