The Department of Materials and Life Sciences at Sophia University offers a Green Science program leading to a four-year bachelor's degree, taught in English with admission each September. Sophia University, located in Tokyo, is a private university whose international student body comes from more than sixty countries, supported by faculty drawn from more than twenty countries, many with overseas study or research backgrounds. The Green Science program combines materials science with life sciences, giving students a foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics before moving into coursework on sustainable materials, biotechnology, and environmental science. Students explore how materials are designed, synthesized, and applied in ways that reduce environmental impact, alongside life science topics such as cell biology, molecular biology, and ecology. Laboratory-based coursework is a standard feature of a materials and life sciences curriculum, giving students direct experience with experimental techniques used in chemistry and biology research. Graduates from programs of this kind commonly pursue careers in materials research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and further graduate study in chemistry, biology, or materials engineering. Tokyo offers access to research institutions, laboratories, and companies working across materials science and the life sciences, giving students exposure to a wide range of scientific and industrial settings. The four-year bachelor's structure allows students to build from general science fundamentals in the early years toward specialized laboratory and research work in materials and life sciences as they progress toward graduation. Instruction in English allows international applicants to pursue coursework without needing to already be fluent in Japanese, even though admission itself involves an examination that includes a Japanese-language subject.
