Master in English and American Studies (MA)

The Master of Arts in English and American Studies at Friedrich Schiller University Jena covers the English language in its descriptive and analytical dimensions alongside the academic study of anglophone literatures and cultures from the Middle Ages to the present. Students can approach the field broadly or specialise in either linguistics or literature and cultural studies. The curriculum places considerable weight on demanding language courses for practical purposes, requiring students to arrive with an excellent command of English. Cooperation agreements with other departments — including German Linguistics, German Literature, History, and Geography — extend the range of courses available in literature and cultural studies, though most of those courses are taught in German.
