English Language Teaching prepares students to teach English as a foreign or second language, combining the study of linguistics with pedagogy and supervised practical teaching experience. The discipline covers how languages are learned and acquired, how instruction should be designed for different age groups and proficiency levels, and how classrooms can be managed effectively to support learning. Typical coursework includes second language acquisition theory, English linguistics, curriculum and materials design, and assessment methods, giving students both theoretical grounding and practical tools for the classroom. Students usually study the structure of the English language in depth, including grammar, phonetics, and vocabulary, so they can explain and teach these elements clearly to learners. Coursework in pedagogy addresses teaching methodologies, lesson planning, and how to adapt instruction for learners with different needs and backgrounds, including younger children and adult learners. Classroom management and educational psychology are often included as well, helping future teachers understand how to create supportive and effective learning environments. Supervised teaching practice is a central component of the program, placing students in real classrooms where they plan and deliver lessons under the guidance of experienced teachers, gradually building confidence and competence. Assessment coursework teaches students how to evaluate learner progress fairly and design tests that accurately measure language proficiency. As programs progress, students may also study educational technology and how digital tools can support language learning.
