This program in English Language Teaching is offered at Mersin University in Mersin, Turkey, and is taught in English over 4 years. The discipline prepares students to teach English as a foreign or second language, combining advanced English proficiency with pedagogical theory and classroom practice. Typical coursework includes second language acquisition, curriculum design, teaching methodology, assessment and testing, educational psychology, and courses in English grammar, phonetics, and literature that deepen subject-matter mastery. Students complete practical teaching components such as microteaching exercises and classroom observation, followed by supervised teaching practice in schools, where they plan lessons, manage classrooms, and adapt instruction to different learner levels and needs. Coursework also addresses the use of technology in language teaching and strategies for supporting learners with varying linguistic backgrounds. Graduates typically become English teachers in primary, secondary, or language institute settings, though some move into curriculum development, educational publishing, or teacher training roles. Others pursue further study in applied linguistics or educational leadership. Delivered in English at Mersin University on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, the program immerses students in the target language throughout their studies, reinforcing the communicative competence expected of future teachers. Across the four years, the curriculum progresses from foundational linguistics and education theory toward supervised, hands-on teaching practice in real classrooms.
