Istanbul Bilgi University

Bachelor in Industrial Design

İstanbul, Turkey Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Industrial design focuses on conceiving and developing products that are functional, manufacturable, and considerate of how people will use them, spanning consumer goods, furniture, electronics, and other manufactured objects. Students in this program typically study design fundamentals such as sketching, 3D modeling, prototyping, and materials and manufacturing processes, alongside subjects like ergonomics, design research, and sustainability. Studio-based coursework forms the core of the curriculum, with students developing product concepts from initial research and sketching through to physical or digital prototypes, often working through several rounds of critique and revision. The program emphasizes both creative and technical skills, teaching students to consider aesthetics, usability, manufacturing constraints, and user needs together when developing a design. Students often work on projects that address real-world design briefs, learning to balance client or market requirements with their own design judgment. Coursework in materials science and production methods helps students understand how design decisions translate into manufacturable products, while research methods courses build skills in understanding user needs and testing design solutions. Graduates of industrial design programs pursue careers as product designers, design researchers, and design consultants, working for manufacturing companies, design studios, or as independent designers across a wide range of industries. This bachelor's program runs 4 years and is delivered in English, supporting engagement with international design literature and practice. It is offered at Istanbul Bilgi University in Istanbul, Turkey, a city with an active manufacturing and design sector.
