Informatics at Università degli Studi di Cagliari is a master's degree program taught in English, running two years, at the university's location in Cagliari, on the island of Sardinia, Italy. Informatics, closely related to computer science, is the study of how information is represented, processed, stored and transmitted using computational systems. At the master's level, students typically work with advanced topics such as algorithms and data structures, software engineering, databases, computer networks, artificial intelligence and machine learning, alongside theoretical foundations like computability and complexity. Coursework often includes practical software development, systems design, and increasingly, data science and the analysis of large datasets, reflecting how central computing has become across nearly every other field. Depending on the specific track chosen, students may specialize further in areas such as cybersecurity, distributed systems, human-computer interaction or computational methods applied to science and industry. Graduates of informatics programs are prepared for a broad range of technical careers, including software developer, systems analyst, data scientist, and research roles in both industry and academia, as well as further study toward a doctorate for those interested in advanced computing research. Because informatics underpins so much of modern industry, from finance to healthcare to manufacturing, graduates often find opportunities across multiple sectors rather than a single specific industry. Studying this program in English at Università degli Studi di Cagliari allows international students to pursue graduate-level computing education while based in Cagliari, admission to the program requiring a bachelor's degree and success in an entrance examination.
