About Master in Intercultural Anglophone Studies

The Master of Arts in Intercultural Anglophone Studies (MAIAS) develops advanced scholarly competence in one of two research areas: Anglophone literatures and cultures (encompassing American Studies, British Studies, and Postcolonial and Diaspora Studies) or English linguistics. Students gain skills to analyse complex questions of language, literature, and culture, with a wide range of objects of study including literature, film, theatre, music, and popular culture. The four-semester programme is structured into five module areas, progressing from foundational to advanced levels and culminating in an independent Master's thesis. Students choose from courses spanning fields such as Ecocriticism and environmental humanities, Intersectionality and diaspora studies, Science fiction and utopianism, World Englishes, and electronically-mediated communication. Students can shape their studies by selecting from numerous thematic areas. Written assignments throughout the programme develop clarity and precision in academic writing. Graduates with distinction may pursue doctoral studies. The expertise and skills acquired also prepare graduates for careers in business, international cultural institutions, media and journalism, publishing, intercultural consulting, and cultural management. The programme is offered at the University of Bayreuth in Bayreuth, Germany.
