Bachelor in Licence - Histoire

Tuition comes to 178 EUR per year.

The Licence - Histoire (History) is a three-year bachelor degree at the Université de Lorraine - UFR Sciences Humaines et Sociales in Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, France, taught in French. It provides a systematic introduction to the study of the past across different periods and regions. History at university level goes well beyond memorising dates and events. Students learn to work with primary sources — documents, images, testimonies, material objects — and to situate them within broader social, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Courses typically span ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern history, with attention to both French and European history and wider world history. Historiography — the study of how historians have interpreted the past — is an important component, as are research methods and academic writing. This discipline trains students to construct arguments from evidence, to handle complexity and contradiction in sources, and to communicate clearly in written and oral form. These transferable skills are valued far beyond academic history itself. Graduates pursue careers in secondary education (after further qualification and competitive examination), archival work and heritage management, museums and cultural institutions, journalism, publishing, the civil service, and international organisations. A master's degree in history, heritage, archival studies, or education is the standard next step. The programme begins in September and lasts 3 years. Yearly tuition is 178 EUR.
