The Licence — Histoire at the Université d'Artois in Arras, France, is a three-year bachelor's program covering the history of human societies from antiquity to the contemporary period. The curriculum is organized around major chronological periods — ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern — and addresses political, social, economic, cultural, and religious history across diverse world regions. Students learn historical methodology, working with primary sources, archival documents, and historiographical debates. Written and oral communication skills are developed through essays, document commentaries, research notes, and oral presentations. The program also introduces auxiliary and related disciplines such as archaeology, art history, and historical geography, broadening students' analytical toolkit. Thematic courses on memory, heritage, and the uses of the past are common alongside the chronological survey courses. The degree is taught in French. History graduates pursue careers in secondary and higher education teaching, archival and heritage work, museum and cultural institution management, journalism, and public administration. A master's degree or preparation for competitive examinations such as the CAPES or the agrégation are standard follow-on paths. The program begins in September and runs for 3 years. Tuition is 178 EUR per year.
