About Master in MA British Studies

The MA British Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary postgraduate programme offered at the Centre for British Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The Centre was founded in 1995 and focuses on British issues in research and public engagement. The programme covers the UK's legal systems and their development, literatures and cultures in the UK, British history and society, social stratification, the development of Britain's political system, and cultural studies theories and methods. The first year constitutes the certificate phase, comprising approximately 30 weeks of teaching across two semesters. The first semester consists of compulsory lectures and seminars; in the second semester, students choose three of six options. Students attend an average of at least 20 hours of classes per week. The second year is the Master's phase, during which students take advanced and interdisciplinary seminars, complete a three-month work placement with an English-speaking organisation, and dedicate the final six months to writing a thesis. With around 130 applications for 32 places, admission is competitive. The programme is based at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin.
