The Master's Programme in Turkic Studies is a joint degree programme between Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany and Uppsala University in Sweden. Students study at both institutions over four semesters, graduating from both universities. The first year takes place at Uppsala University, the second year at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The curriculum spans the classical branches of Turcology: philological analysis of historical sources, codicology and critical edition, historical-comparative linguistics, dialectology, and documentation of modern Turkic languages. Literary studies are integrated throughout, with close reading and analysis of texts from various genres. The programme also incorporates modern digital tools for corpus building and born-digital text editions. Students gain direct exposure to ongoing research projects and may integrate project-related tasks into their coursework. At Uppsala in semesters one and two, students take courses in Old Turkic Philology, History of the Turkic Languages, Comparative Turcology across Siberian Turkic, Kipchak, and Oghuz languages, typology, and Middle Turkic Philology. At Mainz in semester three, coursework moves to Turkic language research, linguistic Turcology, and Turkic literature and culture. The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis, supervised jointly by a Mainz professor and a co-supervisor from Uppsala, with the defence conducted according to German regulations. The programme is based at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Mainz, Germany, with the first year at Uppsala University in Sweden.
