Master in Modern Indian Studies

The Master's in Modern Indian Studies is an interdisciplinary four-semester programme focusing on economic, political, social, and cultural developments in modern India. Five research groups at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) anchor the programme: Modern Indian History, Development Economics, Indian Religions, State and Democracy in Modern India, and Society and Culture in Modern India. Students can choose a thematic specialisation in Anthropology of Power, Historical Sociology, or Development Economics of India, with the chosen focus printed on the MA certificate. Aside from a two-semester introductory course on Interdisciplinary Studies of Modern India, a course in Academic Writing and Research, and courses in modern Indian languages, students are largely free to elect their modules and to choose the theoretical and analytical focus of their thesis. Students who do not select a focus have the same freedom. Up to a certain number of credits can be earned through the Professionalisation area, and students have the option of completing a semester abroad. All courses are conducted in English. German language skills are not required, though students may attend university language courses if they wish. The programme is offered at the University of Göttingen in Göttingen, Germany.
