About Master's in Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE)

The Master's in Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE) at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is a multidisciplinary programme focused on embedded system software in mechatronics and related high-tech fields. The programme covers the scientific and technological foundations needed to address complex engineering problems in areas including automotive systems, robotics and computer vision, microelectronics and hardware engineering, and embedded software engineering. Graduates are expected to be proficient in at least one of these specialisations. The programme runs over four semesters and includes the Master's thesis. The first two semesters each consist of five compulsory modules; specialisation courses are available in the second and third semesters. Compulsory modules span areas such as mathematics for signals and controls, distributed and parallel systems, mechatronic systems engineering, and microelectronics and HW/SW co-design. The research project and Master's thesis may be conducted in cooperation with a company or within a university research setting. Teaching is structured as block lectures, making the programme workable on a part-time basis. Students can spend a semester abroad at one of the programme's partner universities, with a double degree option at KU Leuven (Belgium) and ISEP Porto (Portugal). The ESE programme is offered at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund.
