About Master in Mechanical Engineering, MSc

The MSc in Mechanical Engineering at Technische Hochschule Lübeck is a three-semester programme offering two specialisation profiles. Students select either Design and Systems Engineering, which focuses on product development using model-driven design, digital twin approaches, and intelligent systems, or Materials Science and Engineering, which concentrates on polymers, composite materials, metals, and the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of engineering materials. The first semester provides an expanded foundational knowledge base in subjects such as engineering mechanics, engineering mathematics, and materials science. The second semester deepens specialisation within the chosen profile. The third semester consists of the Master's project, a seminar, and the Master's thesis; students who start in the winter semester take their modules in reverse sequence. Within each profile, students choose a combination of compulsory and elective modules, allowing individual alignment with thesis topics and personal interests. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own studies, and the majority of thesis projects are completed in industry. A special partner programme called International Design Engineer allows students to study one or two semesters at partner universities in Sweden or Poland. Basic German is required to apply for thesis and seminar projects in industry. The programme is located at Technische Hochschule Lübeck in Lübeck, Germany.
