How can educators transform the way young people engage with literature and language, turning passive consumption into a lifetime of critical inquiry? The PGCE English at the University of York invites you to explore this question within a research-informed environment that bridges the gap between pedagogical theory and the realities of the modern classroom.

Designed for those who are passionate about the power of language, this programme empowers you to inspire students to express themselves effectively and critically. You will not merely learn to deliver a curriculum; you will learn to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of secondary education, focusing on National Curriculum requirements for Key Stages 3 and 4 (11-16) with a dedicated post-16 enhancement.

A School-Centred Approach to Professional Growth

The programme is built on a unique collaborative model, with two-thirds of your time spent in regional schools. This immersive experience ensures that your academic study is directly applicable to your daily practice. Whether you are observing experienced practitioners or gradually increasing your own teaching load to 75% of a full-time timetable, you will be supported by expert mentors and university tutors who help you refine your teaching identity. By the end of the year, you will be prepared to contribute to debates in secondary education, backed by a firm understanding of research-informed practice and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
