About PhD Medical Research – Cardiovascular Science

The PhD Medical Research in Cardiovascular Science is a full-time doctoral programme offered jointly by departments of the LMU University Hospital and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München under the Munich Medical Research School. The programme covers a broad range of cardiovascular topics, from cardiology and vascular surgery to paediatric cardiac procedures. Candidates join international research groups focused on the development, pathophysiology, and control of the cardiovascular system, as well as the causes, consequences, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Research spans laboratory investigations through to clinical trials. The programme is structured over six semesters beginning in the winter semester. Candidates must complete two Study Blocks in Munich. Study Block I is an eight-week intensive period covering cardiovascular biology, disease, treatment, epidemiology, basic research methods, analytical tools, and scientific writing, concluded with written exams. Study Block II, held in the following year, covers advanced cardiovascular research and current best practices. Outside these blocks, doctoral work proceeds at the candidate's affiliated institution under a thesis advisory committee. Applicants are welcome from medicine, veterinary medicine, life sciences, pharmacy, health sciences, and related disciplines including medical engineering and epidemiology. The doctoral candidates' thesis advisory committees help define research goals and ensure appropriate interdisciplinary training. Additional support is provided by the GraduateCenter. This programme is offered at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Munich, Germany.
