PhD Postgraduate research in Biological Sciences

Biological Sciences explores the mechanisms that underpin life, from the molecular basis of cellular processes to the dynamics of ecosystems. The PhD programme invites you to investigate questions such as how genetic variation drives evolution, how microbes can be harnessed for sustainable technologies, or how environmental change impacts biodiversity. You will join a community that investigates molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, environmental biology, biotechnology and microbiology.

The research degree is organised into a four-year full-time route or an eight-year part-time alternative. The first year focuses on core training – advanced methodologies, specialist laboratory techniques and academic writing – delivered through workshops and supervised lab work. Subsequent years are devoted to independent project work, regular supervisory meetings and participation in the School of Life Sciences colloquia.
