About Bachelor in Technician Scientist, FdSc - Higher Apprenticeship

Current laboratory staff in the life-science or chemical-science sectors – such as R&D assistants, quality-control technicians, or research institute support workers – who already hold a Chemistry A-level, a relevant BTEC, or comparable industry experience, are the ideal candidates. You will already be familiar with basic laboratory practice and are looking to formalise your skills while earning a recognised qualification.

The three-year blended apprenticeship combines workplace learning with on-campus study days – typically two to three per module – and online workshops. In the first year you study Core Skills for Technician Scientists, Foundations in Chemical and Life Sciences, Core Chemical and Life Sciences and Applied Chemical and Life Sciences. The second year adds Laboratory Applications, Safety and Regulation, Research Skills and an Individual Research Project, followed by a final capstone research project. Practical sessions in university laboratories and assessments based on real-world scenarios support the development of safe, ethical and sustainable laboratory practice.
