About Master in Artificial Intelligence (AI), MSc

Artificial Intelligence at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is a four-semester Master of Science programme that builds a broad and methodologically grounded understanding of AI. Rather than following a data science orientation, the programme concentrates on the constructive modelling and implementation of algorithms, data structures, and neural networks and their applications. Coursework is organised around three central pillars: Symbolic AI, Subsymbolic AI, and AI Systems and Applications. Students take 50 ECTS of elective courses distributed across those pillars, two 10-ECTS project modules completed within research groups, a seminar, a 15-ECTS minor in a field that interfaces with AI, and a 30-ECTS Master's thesis. The thesis can be registered once 70 ECTS credits have been accumulated and must be completed within six months of registration. It is written in English and typically involves regular interaction with a thesis adviser and participation in a research group. The Department of Computer Science supports extensive hands-on project work alongside the coursework, and the programme can begin in either the winter or the summer semester. Graduates are well placed for research careers, doctoral study, or technical roles in industry where strong algorithmic foundations are required. FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg hosts this programme in Erlangen.
