The Master's programme in Computational Engineering (CompEng) at Ruhr-Universität Bochum trains students to work with numerical simulations and computational models in the context of advanced engineering. The curriculum builds competence in civil and structural engineering, engineering mechanics, finite element analysis, computational fluid mechanics, mathematics, and advanced programming — skills required to design and analyse high-tech engineering systems and materials. The programme spans 4 semesters beginning in the winter semester. In the first semester, all students cover foundational courses in mathematics, structural engineering, numerical methods, and mechanics. The second and third semesters combine compulsory and elective courses, and the fourth semester is devoted to the Master's thesis. Students may write their thesis within a university department or in collaboration with an industrial partner. The research-oriented nature of the programme prepares graduates for doctoral studies.
