The Embedded Systems Design (ESD) Master's programme at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences focuses on systems in which mechanical or electromechanical components receive their core functionality through electronics, control, and software. The programme covers embedded systems used across industrial, medical, and scientific instrument applications, with attention to system-on-chip solutions using programmable digital devices. Course topics include system identification, mechatronics, discrete control systems, requirements engineering, and safety and reliability engineering. The programme runs over three semesters starting in the summer semester. The first semester focuses on methods required for embedded systems engineering, including mechatronics, digital systems using VHDL, SoC design, and model-based real-time software development. The second semester is application-oriented, addressing industrial, medical, maritime, and scientific instrument systems alongside a project. Laboratory components increase from 25% in the first semester to 75% by the second semester. The third semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis and defence colloquium, with topics drawn from university research projects or industrial development.
