Translation and interpreting is the discipline concerned with converting spoken and written communication between languages while preserving meaning, tone, and cultural context. In an English-focused program, students build advanced English proficiency alongside their native language, studying translation theory, terminology management, and specialized translation in areas such as law, business, media, and technical documentation. Coursework also covers consecutive and simultaneous interpreting practice, along with English linguistics and literature that support close reading and accurate rendering of source texts. Graduates work as translators and interpreters for government agencies, international organizations, media outlets, and private companies, or as independent language professionals. Others use their language and translation training in international business, diplomacy, journalism, or education, where accurate cross-language communication is required. The program also provides a foundation for further study in applied linguistics or specialized conference interpreting. This 4-year bachelor's program is offered at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, with instruction delivered in English. Students study the discipline of translation and interpreting through English-medium coursework, developing both the language proficiency and the technical translation skills required to work between English and Turkish. Ankara's position as Turkey's administrative capital, with numerous embassies, international organizations, and media outlets, provides practical context for the kinds of translation and interpreting work covered in the curriculum. Studying in English from the outset also supports graduates who plan to pursue further study or professional work in English-speaking or international settings after completing the degree.
