Bachelor in English Translation and Interpreting

İstanbul, Turkey Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

English Translation and Interpreting prepares students to translate and interpret accurately between English and other languages, combining advanced language proficiency with specialized professional training. The discipline covers translation theory and practice, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, and terminology management, alongside specialized translation coursework in domains such as legal, business, technical, and literary texts. Students typically study contrastive grammar and stylistics, developing an understanding of how meaning, tone, and structure shift when moving between English and their other working languages. Practical interpreting exercises are a central part of the training, giving students hands-on experience translating in real time under conditions similar to professional settings such as conferences, business meetings, and legal or diplomatic proceedings. Terminology management coursework teaches students to research and apply specialized vocabulary with precision, which becomes especially important when handling technical or legal material where small errors can have significant consequences. Cultural studies are typically integrated throughout the program as well, since effective translation depends on understanding the cultural context behind language use, not merely its literal meaning. As students progress, many programs introduce computer-assisted translation software and other tools used in professional practice, reflecting how the translation industry has evolved with technology. Group exercises and simulated professional scenarios are common, helping students build the speed and accuracy required in real interpreting assignments. Written translation assignments across multiple text types further develop students' range and adaptability as translators. Graduates typically pursue careers as translators, interpreters, localization specialists, or roles in international business, media, publishing, or diplomacy that require strong bilingual communication skills. This program is taught in English over 4 years at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey.
