Translation and interpreting is the academic and professional discipline concerned with converting spoken and written communication between languages while maintaining accuracy, meaning, and cultural context. In a French-focused program, students build advanced proficiency in French alongside their native language and study translation theory, terminology, and specialized translation across fields such as law, business, and technical writing. Coursework includes practice in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, along with study of French linguistics, literature, and culture that supports precise and context-aware translation work. Graduates of translation and interpreting programs work as professional translators and interpreters for government bodies, international organizations, publishing houses, and private companies, or as freelance language professionals. Others apply their skills in international business, diplomacy, journalism, or education, where fluency in French combined with translation training is valued. The discipline also provides a foundation for further study in applied linguistics or specialized conference interpreting. This program is taught in French. It is a 4-year bachelor's degree offered at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. Students develop French language proficiency alongside the technical skills of translation and interpreting, preparing for work that requires accurate movement of meaning between French and Turkish. Ankara, as the administrative capital of Turkey and home to a range of embassies and international institutions, offers a setting where French-language translation and interpreting skills have practical application. The French-medium instruction shapes the program's focus, distinguishing it from equivalent tracks offered in other languages at the same university.
