Translation and interpreting is the study of converting spoken and written language between two or more languages while preserving meaning, tone, and context. In a German-focused program, students develop advanced proficiency in German alongside their native language, studying translation theory, terminology management, and specialized translation in fields such as law, business, and technical documentation. Coursework also covers consecutive and simultaneous interpreting techniques, practiced through exercises that simulate conference, business, and community interpreting settings. Students study linguistics, German literature and culture, and the ethical and professional standards that govern translation and interpreting work. Graduates work as translators and interpreters for private companies, government agencies, international organizations, and publishing houses, or as freelance language professionals serving clients across sectors. Others apply their language skills in international business, diplomacy, tourism, or education. The combination of language fluency and specialized translation training also supports further study in applied linguistics or conference interpreting. This program is taught in German. It is a 4-year bachelor's degree offered at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. Students study the discipline of translation and interpreting through the medium of German, building the language proficiency and technical vocabulary required for professional translation work between German and Turkish. Ankara's role as the seat of national government and home to numerous embassies and international organizations provides context for the diplomatic and business applications of translation and interpreting studied in the program. The German-medium instruction distinguishes this track from parallel programs offered in other languages at the same university.
