Health science at the Medical University of Silesia, in Katowice, Poland, is a bachelor's degree taught in English over 3 years (6 semesters), offered within the field of midwifery. A midwife, as defined by the program, is a person who has successfully completed a midwifery education recognized in the country where it is located, based on the ICM Essential Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice and the framework of the ICM Global Standards for Midwifery Education, who has acquired the qualifications needed to be registered or legally licensed to practice midwifery and use the title midwife, and who demonstrates competence in midwifery practice. Training covers conducting births under the midwife's own responsibility, providing care for the newborn and infant, and preventative measures including the promotion of normal birth and the detection of complications in mother and child, along with accessing medical care or other appropriate assistance and carrying out emergency measures when needed. The program also builds skills in health counseling and education, addressing not only the woman but also the family and community, with antenatal education and preparation for parenthood forming part of the training, extending toward broader topics in women's health. Graduates of midwifery programs typically work in hospitals, maternity clinics, and community health settings, both in Poland and in health systems internationally that recognize equivalent midwifery qualifications.
