The Machine Learning MSc at the University of Tübingen covers a broad range of machine learning topics alongside general computer science. Beyond a small set of mandatory courses, students compose much of their own curriculum, selecting lectures, seminars, and project lab courses that align with their interests. Teaching draws directly on the research activity present in Tübingen, with faculty drawn from institutes including the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, the Tübingen AI Center, the ELLIS Institute, Cyber Valley, and IMPRS for Intelligent Systems. Because the field is moving rapidly, the content reflects current research questions rather than established textbooks alone. The programme runs over four semesters, beginning in the winter semester. The first semester typically covers Mathematics for Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Data Literacy. Statistical Machine Learning and Probabilistic Machine Learning follow in the second semester. At least one practical course and one seminar are recommended for the second or third semester, and the Master's thesis occupies the fourth semester. Project work throughout the programme gives students the opportunity to write code for research purposes and develop independent scientific projects. Given the interdisciplinary scope of the field, the Master's thesis may be supervised by a professor from any subfield of computer science, which allows students to explore connections between machine learning and adjacent areas.
