    About Master in Menswear Design

Admissions are rolling; tuition is 24,000 EUR for the 12-month program.

Menswear is changing. Learn to design its future.

Menswear is a constantly evolving system where culture, identity, tailoring, innovation and industry come together. The Master in Menswear Design, developed in partnership with Brioni, is an advanced programme for those who want to deepen their understanding of menswear design and develop a contemporary approach to Fashion Design.

You start with research and take it through to the project. You explore the evolution of menswear codes, investigate materials and new technologies, deepen your knowledge of pattern cutting and tailoring, and learn how to turn an idea into a coherent collection.

Throughout the programme, you work on research and collection development projects, bringing together pattern cutting, materials, digital technologies, visual communication and project strategies. Industry Projects also give you the opportunity to work on real briefs, connecting your creative identity with the codes and requirements of the market.

The partnership with Brioni takes you directly into the Maison’s design and tailoring culture. During the Master, you also take part in an immersive experience at Brioni’s headquarters in Penne, Abruzzo, working closely with its Master Tailors and exploring pattern cutting, tailoring construction and product development. It is an important opportunity to connect the classroom with manufacturing, design with craftsmanship, research with the real production chain.

A full-time year in Rome, combining classes, workshops, seminars, Industry Projects and a curricular internship, gives you the creative, technical and strategic skills to develop an independent and personal final project.

The study plan takes the project through all its dimensions: from understanding the cultural identity of menswear to visual research, from digital tools to pattern cutting, and from materials to communication. At the heart of the programme is Fashion Design, where research, design, pattern cutting and tailoring come together in the development of concrete projects and Industry Projects.
    History of Fashion
Looking at Menswear beyond chronology. The history of menswear is explored through a thematic perspective, moving beyond an exclusively historiographical and chronological approach. Identity, society, politics and popular culture become ways of understanding how Menswear has changed its forms, meanings and codes over time. History therefore becomes a research tool for interpreting the present and developing new design directions.
    Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts
The masculine through images. How does the representation of masculinity change? The course explores representations of masculine identity in contemporary fashion, art and photography through images, campaigns and Menswear collections. The aim is to understand the evolution of masculine aesthetic codes as a reflection of cultural and social change, developing a critical perspective to bring into your design practice.
    Digital Technologies and Applications
From pattern to 3D garment. With CLO 3D, you learn to use digital technology as a practical design tool. The course is structured in four stages, starting with pattern development through the 2D interface and moving towards three-dimensional design, prototyping and, finally, collection development. Technology thus becomes part of the creative and production process, allowing you to visualise, test and develop a project before it is physically produced.
    Visual Communication Design Methodology
Telling the story of a project through a precise visual language. A project also needs to be communicated. The course introduces the fundamental principles of Graphic Design, from flat design to pattern creation, using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. The skills acquired are applied to the development of a presentation and digital portfolio: essential tools for communicating research, concept and collection clearly and professionally.
    Pattern Cutting
Understanding the construction of the menswear garment. Pattern cutting is one of the fundamental foundations for transforming a Menswear project into a real garment. The course develops a deeper understanding of menswear pattern cutting, taking students from pattern construction through to fit assessment and prototype development. At the Penne headquarters, Brioni’s Master Tailors support students in exploring basic pattern cutting, creating the toile and developing the prototype by hand and using sewing machines. An experience that connects design with the tangible reality of tailoring construction.
    Fashion Design
The project takes shape. This is the heart of the Master’s Degree. The course brings together the sessions dedicated to reviewing Industry Projects, each developed from a specific brief, with the technical preparation required to explore Menswear design in depth. Research, collection development, pattern cutting and tailoring construction come together in the complete development of each project. The aim is to learn how to manage the entire design process, finding a balance between creative identity, technical feasibility, product quality and the requirements of the brief.
    Professional Practice and Development
Building the story of your brand. A Menswear project also needs to be developed in relation to communication and marketing. The course analyses the Menswear market, critically examining fashion communication models and processes. Building on this knowledge, you learn how to develop a communication plan for a Menswear Brand, connecting identity, product, audience and positioning.
    Materials
Material as part of the design. Knowing a fabric means understanding its structure, behaviour and possibilities. The course explores the identification and classification of fibres and weaves, developing an informed and personal understanding of textile materials and the issues surrounding environmental sustainability. From identifying and organising raw materials to manufacturing processes and treatments, you learn how to use this knowledge to select the most appropriate materials for your project. and treatments to applying this knowledge to the appropriate selection of materials.
