Bachelor in Philosophy

İstanbul, Turkey Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Philosophy is the systematic study of fundamental questions concerning knowledge, existence, values, reason, and language, approached through rigorous argumentation and critical analysis. The discipline typically spans several core areas, including logic, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and political philosophy, alongside study of the history of philosophical thought from ancient to contemporary periods. Students usually begin with foundational courses covering major philosophical traditions and thinkers, developing familiarity with how philosophical problems have been framed and debated across history. Coursework in logic trains students to construct and evaluate arguments precisely, a skill that underlies critical thinking across the discipline and beyond. Ethics coursework examines questions of right and wrong, moral responsibility, and how individuals and societies should act, while epistemology addresses the nature and limits of knowledge and belief. Political philosophy typically explores questions of justice, authority, and the proper organization of society, connecting philosophical inquiry to contemporary political debates. Seminars and close textual analysis are common teaching methods, requiring students to engage directly with primary philosophical texts and construct their own reasoned positions in response. Writing is central to the discipline, since philosophical argument depends on clear, precise expression of complex ideas. As students progress, many programs allow for deeper focus on particular areas of philosophy, such as philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, or aesthetics, depending on individual interests. The analytical and communication skills developed through philosophy are broadly transferable, which is reflected in the range of careers graduates pursue, including law, education, publishing, public policy, and further graduate study in philosophy or related humanities fields. This program is taught in English over 4 years at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey.
