The MSc in Biomedical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University is a research-based programme combining medicine, engineering, and natural sciences including biology, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The curriculum provides both a general foundation in biomedical engineering and a profile centred on current departmental research. Four parallel focal areas are taught: medical imaging techniques (including image-guided therapy and image processing), tissue engineering (cell culture and tissue engineering), materials science (including biomaterials, hard tissue implants, prostheses, and 3D bioprinting), and artificial organs (heart, kidney, lung, and liver). The programme runs four semesters, with three semesters of lectures, seminars, exercises, and practical modules followed by a Master's thesis lasting four to six months. A full-time internship of six to eight weeks takes place in the second semester. General modules account for 65 ECTS, elective mandatory modules for 15 ECTS, the internship for 10 ECTS, and the Master's thesis for 30 ECTS, totalling 120 ECTS. Group size is approximately 50 students. The interdisciplinary programme involves the departments of Medicine, Computer and Natural Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
