Who can apply

Under the Ministry of Education's standards for international undergraduate medical education, applicants need a completed high-school diploma and transcript with good marks, general good health, and evidence of English competence if English isn't their first language — the standards leave entrance testing to each institution rather than naming one nationwide exam. Two of the largest sending markets layer their own pre-departure requirements on top of whatever a Chinese university asks for: Pakistani students must score at least 50% on PM&DC's Medical and Dental College Admission Test and hold a PM&DC Student Registration Certificate before accepting a place at any foreign medical institution, and Indian citizens must have qualified NEET-UG, which the Indian government treats as their Eligibility Certificate once they otherwise meet MBBS admission criteria.

English-medium tracks exist at Ministry-approved institutions, but Chinese is compulsory alongside them by the same standards, specifically so students can communicate with patients once clinical years start — most cohorts spend the pre-clinical years building enough Mandarin to function on the wards later, rather than picking it up on arrival.

Scholarships, honestly

Global Admissions' scholarship data lists 5 named medicine scholarships for China: the Xiamen University Scholarship for New International Students (MBBS) (Xiamen University — a second-class, tuition-only award decided after admission); the Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship (Fujian Provincial Government, via Xiamen University — RMB 30,000 a year, subject to annual review and provincial approval); the Nanjing Government Scholarship (Nanjing Municipal Government, via Nanjing Medical University — seats decided by the government each intake); the NMU Full Tuition Scholarship (Nanjing Medical University — covers tuition for a stated share of admitted students); and the Zhejiang University Lead Scholarship (Zhejiang University International School of Medicine — RMB 20,000, awarded to about 5% of new MBBS students).

Several Chinese universities publish named MBBS tuition waivers and provincial-government scholarships — real and recurring at multiple schools, but merit-based and only for a share of admits; most students still pay published tuition.

What to weigh

The gap between the marketing and the reality is mostly linguistic: "English-taught" describes the coursework, not the whole programme — Chinese study is a Ministry of Education requirement throughout, not an optional add-on, so it needs real study time budgeted rather than being treated as background noise.

Whether a China MBBS is usable back home depends entirely on your national regulator, and in places on the specific university, not on the degree alone. India's National Medical Commission requires at least 54 months of study and a 12-month internship completed at the same foreign institution before its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate rules even apply; Pakistan's PM&DC checks institutional recognition and runs its own registration steps before departure and after return; and Nigeria's Medical and Dental Council says it won't recognise graduates whose clinical rotations happened somewhere unregulated or outside the country where the university sits. Is MDCAT required for Pakistani students going to China?
Yes — under PM&DC's policy effective from the 2024-25 session, a student who completed intermediate education in Pakistan must score at least 50% in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test before admission to any foreign undergraduate medical institution, China included, and must also hold a PM&DC Student Registration Certificate before accepting the place. That's a Pakistani pre-departure requirement, separate from whatever admission process the Chinese university itself runs, so clearing a university's own entry bar doesn't exempt a Pakistani applicant from it.
Is MBBS in China (or Central Asia) a scam?
Not inherently — China runs a real, Ministry of Education-regulated route into English-medium clinical medicine, with set entrance standards and a required 48-week internship at institutions Beijing has approved for international enrolment. What that regulation doesn't do is guarantee any one named university is recognised by your home country's medical regulator, which is a separate check agents sometimes skip past. Verify a school against your own regulator's list (NMC, PM&DC, MDCN, or equivalent) and cross-check its tuition on the university's own page before paying anyone.
What is the medium of instruction?

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination — also called the Screening Test — is the exam India's National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences runs for citizens who completed a primary medical qualification abroad. The National Medical Commission's Screening Test Regulations require it before a foreign-trained graduate can get provisional or permanent registration to practise in India, and the Indian government describes it as the standard screening step for that entire cohort, not something specific to any one destination country.
Which country is cheapest for MBBS for Indian students?
