    MBBS Abroad Without NEET: What's Actually True

    Plenty of universities abroad will admit you without NEET. That is true — and it is also the most expensive misunderstanding in this market.

    Admission is the university's rule. Practicing in India is NMC's — and NMC requires NEET, whatever the university asked for.

    Two different questions

    "Does this university require NEET to admit me?" and "Does NEET still apply to me?" have different answers, and conflating them is where a lot of confusion about this topic comes from. The first is set by the destination university's own admission process. The second is set by India's own medical regulator, and applies to you as an Indian citizen regardless of what any foreign university asks for.

    A destination not asking for NEET at admission tells you nothing about whether NMC still requires you to have qualified it before you enroll.

    The NMC rule, stated plainly

    The National Medical Commission requires Indian citizens and OCIs intending to obtain a primary medical qualification abroad on or after May 2018 to have qualified NEET. NMC treats the NEET result as the applicant's Eligibility Certificate, once the person also meets the destination's own prescribed MBBS admission criteria.

    This is a condition on the student, not a condition the foreign university enforces. Nothing about a university's own admission process — asking for NEET or not — changes what NMC requires of an Indian citizen who intends to use the resulting degree toward registration in India.

    The exception worth knowing

    "No Global Admissions-listed destination asks for NEET" isn't a universal statement about every university abroad. It's specific to the 12 destinations and sourced admission processes in the table below. One documented counterexample: Kazakhstan's Kazakh National Medical University (not currently a Global Admissions-listed destination) lists NEET separately as part of its own 2025-26 English-language Medicine admission process for applicants from India — a provider-specific requirement, not a nationwide Kazakhstan rule.

    Nepal adds a different wrinkle. Nepal's Medical Education Commission requires its own foreign-study Eligibility Certificate applicants to hold a score card from its Unified Entrance Examination, but for undergraduate MBBS study specifically in India, MEC names NEET as the recognized alternative — meaning NEET matters to a Nepali applicant too, if their destination is India specifically.

    The return-home caveat

    This is the part worth repeating: a university admitting you without a NEET score does not exempt you from NMC's own requirement. NMC treats a qualifying NEET result as the Eligibility Certificate for any Indian citizen or OCI obtaining a primary medical qualification abroad on or after May 2018 — that condition sits with NMC, not with the foreign university, and no admission process abroad can satisfy it on your behalf.

    Qualify NEET before you enroll if returning to register and practice in India is part of your plan. Treat a university's silence on NEET as exactly that — silence — not as confirmation that NMC's requirement doesn't apply to you.

    • Confirm the university appears on your home country's medical regulator list (e.g. NMC, PMDC, MDCN) before applying.
    • Cross-check the tuition figure on the university's own official fee page — not a third-party agent site.
    • Confirm the teaching language matches what you can actually study in (English-medium vs local-language track).
    • Check the exact degree title awarded (MBBS vs MD vs Bachelor of Medicine) and whether it's recognized back home.
    • Ask about the internship and clinical-rotation structure — some programs require it happen abroad, not at home.
    • Understand your home country's return-home licensing rule (e.g. NEET, MDCAT, a screening exam) before you commit.

    Can I do MBBS abroad without NEET?
    A foreign university might admit you without asking for a NEET score — several of Global Admissions' sourced destinations run their own entrance exams or criteria that don't mention NEET. But if you're an Indian citizen or OCI, NMC separately requires you to have qualified NEET before obtaining a foreign primary medical qualification, regardless of what the university itself asked for. Admission without NEET and eligibility to use the degree in India afterward are two different things.
